PRP Knee Injections London

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) knee injections use a concentrate of platelets from your own blood to ease pain and stiffness from knee osteoarthritis. At EliteSkin, every injection is given by a GMC-registered doctor at Marble Arch Medical Centre, 217 Edgware Road, London W2.
What Is PRP for the Knee?
A small sample of your blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets, which carry natural growth factors. The concentrated plasma is then injected into the knee joint. It is thought to calm inflammation and support the tissues in the joint, which can ease pain and improve movement.

How Does Treatment Work?
We take a small blood sample, prepare the PRP in a centrifuge, then inject it into the knee joint. Most people have 1–3 injections, a few weeks apart. Improvement usually builds over 6–12 weeks.
1. Consultation
Your doctor assesses your knee, symptoms and any scans, and agrees a plan. Your consultation is free.
2. Preparation
A small blood sample is taken and spun to concentrate the platelets.
3. Treatment
The knee is cleaned and the PRP is injected into the joint. The visit takes about 45–60 minutes.
4. Aftercare
Rest the knee for 48 hours, then return to gentle walking. We review your progress at 6–8 weeks.

Is PRP the Same as a Steroid Injection?
No. A steroid injection can ease pain quickly, but the effect often fades within weeks. PRP uses your own platelets, works more slowly and, in trials, its benefit has lasted longer, up to 12 months for some people.
When Will I See Results, and How Long Do They Last?
Most people notice less pain and stiffness after 6–12 weeks. In studies, benefits lasted 6–12 months, and some people repeat treatment once a year.
Results vary, and PRP does not reverse arthritis or regrow cartilage.
Are There Any Side Effects?
The knee may feel sore, swollen or stiff for 2–3 days, and you may have a small bruise where blood was taken.
Infection is rare, as the injection is given under sterile conditions. Your doctor will explain all risks before treatment.
Why Choose a Doctor-Led Clinic for PRP Knee Injections?
A knee injection must go accurately into the joint, under sterile conditions.
- A doctor checks whether PRP suits your knee, or whether you need a scan or referral
- A doctor can recognise and treat any complication
At EliteSkin, every PRP knee injection is given by a GMC-registered doctor.
Can I Get PRP Knee Injections on the NHS?
PRP for knee osteoarthritis is rarely offered on the NHS. NICE says the evidence on how well it works is still limited, so it should be used with careful consent and audit of results, which we follow. Before your visit:
- Bring any knee X-ray or MRI reports
- List the painkillers and injections you have tried
- Stop anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen 5 days before, unless your doctor says otherwise
- Drink plenty of water on the day
During your free consultation, your doctor will explain whether PRP is right for you.
When Should I Seek Urgent Help?
Call us or seek urgent care if your knee becomes hot, red and very swollen, or you have a fever after the injection, as these can be signs of infection. This page is general information and does not replace medical advice. Reviewed by Dr Katerina Konstantinou.
