How Does Treatment Work?
The treatment is a preventive medicine, not a painkiller. It is given as 31 small injections into the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck and shoulders, and is thought to calm the pain signals involved in migraine. The same approach is used in NHS headache clinics and is recommended by NICE for adults with chronic migraine.
1. Consultation
Dr Katerina reviews your symptoms, past treatments and medicines, and confirms the diagnosis. Your first consultation is free.
2. Headache diary
Keep a diary for at least a month before treatment, so we can measure how well it works.
3. Treatment
31 quick injections with a very fine needle, taking about 10–15 minutes. Most people feel only a brief sting.
4. Aftercare
Go back to normal activities the same day and avoid rubbing the areas for a few hours. We review your diary before each 12-weekly session.

Is It the Same as Anti-Wrinkle Treatment?
No. It is a medical treatment with a different dose and injection pattern, planned to prevent migraine rather than for cosmetic results. It is prescribed only after a face-to-face consultation with a doctor.
When Will I See Results, and How Long Do They Last?
Many people notice fewer headache days within 1 to 2 weeks. The full effect can take two sessions, so we judge results after the second session, about 6 months in.
Treatment usually continues if headache days fall by at least 30%. We stop or change the plan if it is not helping, and review it if your migraine becomes less frequent for 3 months in a row.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived. They can include a headache on the day of treatment, tenderness or bruising where the needle went in, neck or shoulder ache that can last a few weeks, and a slightly drooping eyelid or brow that wears off.
The treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with some nerve and muscle conditions. Dr Katerina will go through your medical history and current medicines first.
Why Choose a Doctor-Led Clinic for Migraine Treatment?
Migraine treatment uses a prescription-only medicine, so it must be prescribed after a proper medical assessment.
- Your treatment is planned and given by a GMC-registered doctor
- Your headache diary is reviewed at every visit, so you can see whether it is working
At EliteSkin, every migraine patient is seen by our Medical Director, Dr Katerina Konstantinou.
Can I Get This Treatment on the NHS?
Yes, NHS headache clinics offer this treatment if you meet NICE criteria, but waiting lists can be long. Many patients choose a private appointment to be seen sooner, and you do not need a GP referral to book with us. Before your visit:
- Bring a list of migraine medicines you have tried
- Bring any letters from your GP or neurologist
- Start a headache diary
- Keep taking your usual medicines unless told otherwise
During your free consultation, Dr Katerina will explain whether this treatment is right for you.
When Should I Seek Urgent Help?
Call 999 or go to A&E if you have a sudden, severe headache, a headache after a head injury, or a headache with weakness, confusion, fever, a stiff neck or changes in your vision. This page is general information and does not replace medical advice. Reviewed by Dr Katerina Konstantinou.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many injections are there?
31 small injections across 7 areas: forehead, temples, back of the head, neck and shoulders. They take about 10 to 15 minutes.
Does migraine injection treatment hurt?
Most people feel a quick sting with each injection. A very fine needle is used and there is no recovery time.
How soon will it work?
Many people notice a difference within 1 to 2 weeks. The full benefit can take two sessions, about 6 months.
How often do I need treatment?
Every 12 weeks. The effect wears off by then, so regular sessions keep migraines under control.
Will it stop my migraines completely?
It is designed to reduce how often migraines happen and how severe they are, not to cure migraine. A fall of 30% or more in headache days is seen as a good response.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book a free consultation with Dr Katerina directly. Bring a list of migraine medicines you have tried and any letters from your GP or neurologist.
Can I keep taking my migraine tablets?
Usually yes. Your doctor will check your current medicines and advise you.
