Safety first: every mole is checked by a doctor

Before any removal, your doctor examines each mole and asks how long you havehad it and whether it has changed. Most moles are harmless and can be removedfor cosmetic or comfort reasons. If a mole looks unusual – for example it haschanged in size, shape or colour, has an irregular edge, bleeds or itches –we will not burn it away. Instead it is cut out and stitched so it can besent to a laboratory for testing, or we advise you to see your GP for anurgent NHS referral.

How we remove moles, skin tags, warts and milia

Your doctor chooses the method that suits the lesion and gives the bestcosmetic result:

• Hyfrecation (radiofrequency): a fine probe uses a low electrical current togently remove small, harmless lesions such as skin tags, small flat moles, warts and milia. No stitches and usually only a small scab that heals within1–2 weeks. Because the lesion is removed by heat, there is no tissue left tosend to a laboratory, so this method is only used for lesions the doctor isconfident are harmless.

• Shave removal: a raised mole is shaved level with the skin under localanaesthetic. No stitches, and it usually leaves a small flat mark that fadesover time.

• Excision (cut and stitch): the mole is fully cut out under localanaesthetic and the skin is closed with fine stitches. This is used when amole needs laboratory testing (histology), or when it sits deeper in theskin. The removed tissue is sent to a laboratory and your doctor discussesthe result with you.

What to expect on the day

1. Consultation and mole check: your doctor examines each lesion, explainsthe best method, any risks and the likely scar, and confirms the price.

2. Numbing: a small local anaesthetic injection or numbing cream keeps youcomfortable.

3. Removal: most lesions take only a few minutes each; a full appointmentusually takes 15–30 minutes.

4. Aftercare: you go home the same day with written aftercare advice and canusually return to work immediately.

Aftercare and healing

• Keep the area clean and dry for 24–48 hours.

• Don't pick the scab – let it fall off naturally (usually 7–14 days).

• Use SPF 30+ on the area for several months to help the mark fade.

• If you had stitches, we will tell you when they need to be removed.

• Contact us if you notice increasing redness, swelling, pus or pain.

Will it leave a scar?

Most small lesions removed by hyfrecation or shave removal leave a small pinkor pale mark that fades over several months. Excision leaves a fine linescar. Your doctor will tell you what to expect for your specific mole beforetreatment.

Mole removal FAQs

Is mole removal painful?

No. The area is numbed first, so most people feel only a small scratch fromthe anaesthetic and then pressure during removal.

How long does mole removal take?

Most lesions take a few minutes each. A full appointment, including theconsultation, usually takes 15–30 minutes.

Will my mole be tested in a laboratory?

Moles that need testing are cut out and stitched (excision) and sent to alaboratory. Lesions removed by hyfrecation cannot be tested, which is why weonly use that method for lesions the doctor is confident are harmless.

Can a mole grow back?

Occasionally a small part of a mole can return, especially after shaveremoval. If this happens, contact us and your doctor will advise you.

Can you remove moles on the face?

Yes. Facial moles are common and your doctor will choose the method thatgives the most discreet result.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us. If your doctor has any concern about amole, we will tell you straight away and advise on next steps, including NHS referral where appropriate.

Is mole removal available on the NHS?

The NHS usually removes moles only when they may be cancerous or are causingmedical problems. Cosmetic mole removal is normally done privately.

When can I go back to work or the gym?

Most people return to work the same day. Avoid swimming, saunas and strenuousexercise for a few days, or until any stitches are removed.
